SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS |
COMMENTS |
| Blood Smear Examination |
RBC exam (morphology, parasites), manual differential cell
count, WBC exam, Plt. smear estimate |
EDTA > 1/2 full or 2 dry unstained blood smears. |
Platelet estimate from the smear is qualitative: very low,
low, adequate or increased |
| CBC (mammalian) |
WBC, RBC, Hgb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW (red cell distribution
width), Plt count, MPV, RBC exam, manual differential cell count,
WBC exam, Plt smear estimate, plasma appearance, total protein
(refractometer) |
EDTA > 1/2 full or 1 full microtainer |
A reticulocyte count is automatically added to standard hemogram
for no extra charge in dogs (Hct < 39%) and cats only (Hct
< 25%). |
| Automated CBC (mammalian) |
WBC, RBC, Hgb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Plt count, MPV, automated
differential cell count |
EDTA > 1/2 full or full microtainer |
Applicable for certain species, e.g. dogs, cats, horses, cattle
(call the lab for others) |
| CBC (non-mammalian) |
WBC, PCV, manual differential cell count, WBC exam, Plt smear
estimate, plasma appearance, total protein (refractometer) |
(1) 1 ml EDTA blood or
(2) 2 heparinized PCV tubes, 1 eosinophil unopette, and 2-4
dried blood smears. |
Heparin anticoagulant invalidates counts by causing clumping
of cells. For species in which EDTA causes hemolysis, eg. ostrich,
collect in citrate or as option 2. |
| WBC Panel |
WBC, manual differential cell count, platelet smear estimate,
RBC exam, WBC exam |
EDTA > 1/2 full or 1 full microtainer |
|
| Automated WBC Panel |
WBC, automated differential cell count |
EDTA > 1/2 full or 1 full microtainer |
Applicable for certain species, e.g. dogs, cats, horses, cattle
(call the lab for others) |
