Bone Marrow Cytology Report

An example of our bone marrow report is indicated at the bottom of the page. For all bone marrows (f we have sufficient slides), we perform morphologic evaluation using Wright-Giemsa stained smears and an assessment of bone marrow iron using Prussian blue-stained smears. Further specialized procedures, such as cytochemical evaluation, can be performed on selected patients, when requested.

Bone marrow aspirate from a cat with acute myeloid leukemia. The bone marrow is totally replaced by a population of blasts. These were monoblasts on the basis of cytochemical staining. A single megakaryocyte (red arrow), neutrophil (black arrow) and nucleated red blood cell (blue arrowhead) can be seen.

For all bone marrows, we must have access to hemogram results collected on the same day as the bone marrow sample. These results can be provided to us as hard copies if performed in-house (for our DL clients), however we prefer to perform our own hemograms or at the very least blood smear examinations. There have been many occasions on which we have detected something diagnostic in peripheral blood smears, not specified in the hemogram report provided to us. For this reason, for all bone marrow submissions, please provide peripheral blood in EDTA with 2-3 freshly dried unstained air-dried unfixed blood smears.
