| Below is an image of our lytes plus chemistry panel report. This
panel differs from our electrolyte panel (lytes) in the following
ways: it includes ionized calcium and is performed on our blood gas/
electrolyte analyzer, the ABL-600, and not our Hitachi. The lytes
panel or mineral/lytes panel is performed on the Hitachi. The ABL-600
measures electrolytes and ionized calcium using ion-selective electrodes
without sample dilution (direct potentiometry).
Click on the ionized calcium result below to obtain more information
about the test. More information on the other electrolytes can be
found under the small animal panel. The lytes plus panel is performed
on heparinized whole blood or plasma. Samples must be kept anaerobic
and must be submitted promptly as ionized calcium is affected by
changes in pH.
Please note that the e in front of the results indicates that the
result was obtained from the ABL.
Exclamation marks indicate when a test result is outside the reference
interval for that species. We only have reference intervals for
dogs, cats, horses and cattle.
The reference intervals for electrolytes using the blood gas machine
are much narrower (and likely more representative of the physiologic
state) than those from the Hitachi. This is because these reference
intervals were determined in samples maintained under strict conditions
of storage, i.e. collected into heparinized syringes, plunged into
ice, and assayed anaerobically within 30 minutes of collection.
For even more information on each of these analytes (e.g. disease-associated
increases), please refer to the Chemistry Module under Clinical
Pathology Modules.
