Clinical Pathology Laboratory - Available Test

Available Tests
We offer a variety of hematologic, chemistry, immunologic and cytologic tests. These tests are offered in 2 ways:

Group tests or panels
The individual tests are grouped together, e.g. chemistry panel, mineral electrolytes panel, hemogram. For most group tests or panels, the individual component tests within each panel can be ordered separately as individual tests. For example, sodium is part of our large and small animal panels as well as our mineral lytes panel. It can also be ordered as an individual test.

Individual tests
Some individual tests are not offered as part of a panel, e.g. triglycerides or lipase. We have specific sample requirements for our various tests to optimize the results that are obtained from the samples. These can be observed under Sample Submission. The prices for both individual and group tests can be observed under Price List.

Results
For examples of our various reports, please view under the individual tests under Tests we offer.

Cornell University Hospital for Animal Patients
The best way to view our reports is via MUMPS. Laboratory results are immediately available after they have been entered into the computer database. The results can be viewed under function "LR" (laboratory reports) and "LU" (laboratory update). All laboratory results entered during the day are printed in medical records that evening (starting after midnight) and should be in the patient's record the following day. Printed reports are left in Medical Records on weekends. If no printout can be found, please check in Medical Records before calling the lab. Results can also be viewed via Clinician's desktop under laboratory results, but it must be realized that there is a delay (which can be quite substantial) between result entry in our laboratory and the results being available when using this system. Note that we will not provide results over the telephone.

In general, results for all samples submitted prior to 3 o'clock should be expected to be in the computer by 5.00 pm. With cytologies, there may be a slightly longer delay in results, but they are usually in the computer by 7.00 pm. Results on specimens submitted after 3 pm should not be expected the same day, although we make every effort to finish everything on the day of submission.

Diagnostic Center Customers
Reports for our Animal Health Diagnostic Center clients print overnight. They are reviewed in the morning (samples for Saturday are reviewed on Monday) by the Clinical Pathologist on duty and signed out. The results are only available after they have been reviewed. This results in a minimum of a 1-day delay between the time we receive the samples until the results are reported. We will fax results through as soon as they have been reviewed, if the fax option has been checked off on the request form. Otherwise, results are mailed via US Mail. The exceptions are STAT samples, which are faxed as soon as results are ready, but these are subject to a $10.00 surcharge. We will report out preliminary results over the telephone, however these results have not been reviewed. Because some changes may be made to the results by the Clinical Pathologist on duty, we prefer not to provide preliminary reports.

If you are calling about a result (e.g. to obtain results over the telephone, to consult with a clinical pathologist about results), you need to provide us with the Diagnostic Center accession number of the case you are interested in. This can be found at the top right hand corner of the Diagnostic Center request form or under accession # on the top left hand corner of the header of our Clin. Path report. The Diagnostic Center accession number is a 5 or 6 digit number followed by the last 2 digits of the year and an item number, e.g. 71754-00-1. (The item number applies to request forms with multiple animals. Each animal is considered an item number.)
