WBC are small cells, usually larger than a RBC (see image to the right), that are regularly round with clear borders and have a slightly grainy appearance. Their grainy nature helps to distinguish WBCs from RBCs which are smoother (and also slightly red-tinged from hemoglobin - there is a RBC just below the WBC highlighted in the image). They are found in normal in urine (i.e. from healthy animals) in low numbers. Up to 5 WBC/HPF generally are considered acceptable as "normal". For more information, see urine sediment atlas.
