Casts in urine

Casts are cylindrical protein-based molds of the urinary tubule lumen. They are absent or very few in urine samples from normal animals. Increased numbers of casts are usually a result of damage to renal tubular cells. For more information on casts, see the appropriate section in the Urine Sediment Atlas.
